Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station, located in Lacey Township, near the New Jersey shore, began operations in 1969 as the first large-scale commercial nuclear power plant in the United States.

Its single boiling water reactor produces 650 net megawatts. General Public Utilities sold Oyster Creek in August 2000 to AmerGen, a joint venture of PECO and British Energy, of Edinburgh, Scotland.
