LaSalle County
Generating Station, located in rural LaSalle County in northern Illinois,
is a two-unit nuclear generating facility capable of generating 1,140
net megawatts per unit. Together the units can produce enough power
to support the electricity needs of over two million average American
homes.
Its Units 1 and 2 began commercial operation in August 1982 and April
1984, respectively. Both of LaSalle's units are boiling water reactors
designed by General Electric. The units are cooled with water from
a 2,058-acre man-made lake, which is also a popular fishery managed
by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
